New iphone day in America

This morning on my way to work, I heard that people had been camping out at ATT stores in order to be the first ones to get the new 3G iphone today. As I was driving by an ATT store a few minutes later, there were hundreds of people waiting outside. I was blown away by the sheer numbers of people that were there to get a new phone today.

It struck me just how materialistic we Americans are and how big we are on having the newest and coolest things as status symbols. And the sad thing is...I'm sure there were a number of Christians out there today in the thick of it. Now, I am just as guilty as the next person on being materialistic. My wants are just different.

Over the last year or so, materialism has been on my mind a lot. I've tried to train my mind to not want things as much as I used to. But still, sometimes it's hard. But then there are days like today that make me think about that whole topic again.

I'm glad you posted this today, Steph...I was going to AT&T store at noon to see if I could find a new bluetooth, as mine has bitten the dust. I won't go now!!! My commute is the best time to make "checking on you" calls since it's hwy with little traffic...and I won't call without an earfone. Thanx!

Marcus was there this morning getting a new iphone for his boss. There were even people waiting in line here in Abilene.

Our culture makes it very hard not to be materialistic. Everything about it is geared to materialism. Because it is so pervasive many Christians don't even stop to think about it. It is always hard to notice something that has always been that way or is normal.

Actually I think Dallas is worse than other places when it comes to materialism. That was one of the things I really didn't like about living there.

I took the kids to the mall play area this morning and was shocked to find about 500 people in a long twisting line leading from the apple store.

I would also go with the patience issue here. Why do we have to have it today? Can't we wait a few days while the crowds die down if we really want one. I am working on materialism as well--I think we all are in one way or another. I am totally not into technology so this hype is unknown to me.

I completely agree with you, especially after attending Urban Experience the 2nd year in a row! I really don't want an iPone from ACU in the Fall because I'm afraid I'll become dependent on it, ya know?? It kind of scares the crap outta me actually!
