The SBC

I grew up in a Baptist church. I love the church that I grew up in and the people there. Chris and I probably would have kept going there after we got married if it wouldn't have been a 30-40 minute drive over there.

In all the years of growing up in a Baptist church, there were many times that I felt embarassed for the SBC. They just seem to want to express their opinion about every little thing that is going on. And quite a bit of the time, they make themselves look foolish.

Yesterday, I received an online magazine with an article talking about the SBC's view on Sarah Palin running for Vice President. Here's what it said:
"Sarah Palin’s candidacy has caused the Southern Baptist Convention to answer questions about its position regarding a women being vice president. Representatives from the SBC say Sarah Palin’s vice presidential candidacy is acceptable, but the organization still does not condone women becoming pastors or working outside the home without their husbands’ permission.
Offering explanation, most representatives say that who should serve in public office is not something the Bible addresses, unlike pastor leadership or marital roles. Similarly, they note that Todd Palin has been publicly supportive of his wife throughout her political career, including her being governor of Alaska.
The only concerns addressed about Palin seem to be whether or not her being a high-ranking federal executive will compromise her ability to care for her children, which Baptists affirm is the most important role for women.
Though the SBC does not agree with ordaining women, it leaves pastoral decisions to each autonomous church."

While I agree with most of what is being said here, I still don't get why the SBC feels the need to comment on this topic. It just seems like they might be more respected if they would just comment on truly important topics. Instead we hear from them all of the time about anything and everything.

Yeah.. kind of silly, I think. That's why people always think Baptists are pretty crazy about the submission topic. Sounds kind of backwards.
Wish MY husband had not given me permission to work outside the home!! haha

Well, being an evangelical feminist who believes in mutual submission, instead of the headship/submission model, I find it insulting that the SBC thinks that God thinks that I need Marcus' permission to do anything except stay home and have children, but apparently, as far as God is concerned, Marcus could do anything and everything without my permission.

IMO, this is the kind of stuff that makes evangelicals look out of touch, backwards, and just plain silly.

OK rant over!
