Texas Accent?

I am in a workshop all week for work which has been great so far! There is a guy in the workshop from Guam. Yesterday he told me that I have a strong Texas Accent and then started mimicking me. I didn't realize that I had such a bad accent, but I guess I do. Now I'm paranoid when I talk. :)

Have you ever had anyone tell you that you had a strong Texas/Southern accent?

I think occasionally I'll slip into it - Casey likes to make fun of me when I do, although he's waaaay worse than me! My college roommate, Holly, used to tease me that I spoke with more of a British lilt to my accent when I was visiting with my grandparents - they have S. African accents.

you do have a strong accent, but most of the time it's not noticeable because guess what? everybody else around you has one too!

When I moved to California I got told that so often for about the first year. When people would say "where are you from?" I would say "Chino" (the city I lived in) and they would say "no, really, where did you come here from?" and I would say Tennessee because I had lived there for two years before moving to CA, and believe me their accent is much stronger than ours!!

If you go again this week, imitate him. I'm sure he has some kind of strong accent too! Is he nice and funny, or rude?!

Yes, I get that all the time here. And, I don't think I even have an accent. But, I guess here, I do.

It's funny, because I have noticed Sydney picking up her teacher's accent. (Her teacher is from England.) Lately, her class has been working on recognizing patterns & Sydney will say, "Mom, is this a patton?" (She emphasizes the "t"s.) Sammy & I get a good laugh out of it.

I do not have an accent. I was talking to some brokers from New York when I worked for CITGO and they were suprised that I was from Oklahoma b/c I did not have an accent. I was actually kind of sad about it. I do not have a distinguishing accent at all. Oh well.

Ok, the guy from Guam is just jealous. Everyone in the world can recognize the Texas Drawl over any other spoken language. Keep the accent, it is part of what makes you special.

By the way I once had a friend from Arkansas (he has been in Texas for 25 years now, so he is from Texas now). His family did not like Texans. His dad told him that what he really didn't like about Texans is that Texans thought they were better than anyone else. The really bad news, Dad says, is that they are right. Texans are better. Now that Arkansan at least got one thing right. Keep the accent.
